THE DESPERATE SINGLE

The phenomenon of desperation among singles, particularly in the pursuit of relationships, is both alarming and widespread. Many individuals, eager to escape the status of being single, often lose sight of their self-worth and settle for less than they deserve. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 139:14, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.” Knowing that we are wonderfully made should give us confidence that we are valuable in God’s eyes, whether single or married.
In a society that places undue emphasis on being in a relationship or getting married, many singles feel pressured to find a partner at any cost. They fear loneliness or societal judgment more than they value their personal happiness and emotional well-being. But Isaiah 41:10 tells us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” God assures us of His presence, and we should not fear being alone, as He walks with us even in our singleness.
Desperation can blind singles from recognizing red flags or potential problems in relationships. Proverbs, the book of wisdom, cautions us in Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Singles must guard their hearts and avoid rushing into relationships that could lead to emotional harm. Rather than seeking validation from others, singles should seek God’s approval and focus on growing in their relationship with Him.
It is vital to trust God's timing. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” This scripture reassures us that God’s timing is perfect, and waiting on Him will bring the right person at the right time. We must remain patient, knowing that a relationship built on God’s foundation will stand the test of time.
In the meantime, singles should focus on personal growth, self-love, and understanding what they truly want in a partner. Matthew 6:33 instructs, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Seeking God first will align us with His purpose, and He will bring the right person into our lives in due season.
Finally, true happiness and fulfillment come from God, not from another person. Philippians 4:11–13 speaks about contentment, saying, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances... I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Singles must embrace contentment in their current season, trusting that God has a plan for their lives.
At the end of the day, it’s far better to wait for the right person, guided by God, than to settle out of desperation. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Waiting on God’s plan will always lead to a fulfilling and purposeful future.
